| Hello. I'll be travelling with my wife and kids from Frankfurt and drive down to Heidelberg, Munich onto Salzburg (hopefully to Vienna too) via rental car mid December till New Year's day. The heaviest snowfall and lowest temperatures are in January and February. I have never heard of these roads closed due to winter conditions! German and Austrian roads are very safe and have extremely efficient snow clearing systems, roads and even pathways in the towns and cities are cleared and grained hourly if necessary, even through the night for the thousands of daily commuters.Have you driven in snow and on ice before? I remember my first winter here (I'm originally from South Africa) in January 1992 traveling every day to and from work in the dark between Salzburg and Burghausen.
The Apostle Islands, nestled on Lake Superior in northern Wisconsin, are a rustic camper's dream. Several of the islands hold campsites, but Sand Island is the most tranquil, with nothing but you, an old lighthouse and the stars. The mighty Lake Superior is the perfect setting for the 60 campsites, both wooded and open. If you want warm weather, go in the late summer months, but for true beauty, visit in the fall when the trees are changing colors, and the vibrance of the leaves contrasts beautifully with the pristine lake. If you get restless, you can take day trips to the sea caves around the islands, or go wildlife watching. Just beware, as bears are becoming more common around the islands.

And a storm churning in the Gulf of Alaska a is bringing waves of rain and snow to the Northwest. The higher mountains to the west are a different story. I just came back from shopping I saw one of the wildest things I've ever seen on a highway. A truck was hauling what must have been a blade from a wind turbine, although it was colored like an airplane propeller. It looked like it was around 100 ft. long crazy! Margie

We did live in Garland, Texas for a while though and I remember my mom, Tanya P, on her way to work, had to turn around and come home because the roads were all black ice and people were just stopped at the intersections and just playing around on the ice. (Correct me if I'm wrong Mom). I remember she came home and we went out on or own neighborhood street and played on the ice. Then I remember a neighbor woman coming out of her home to get her paper and she didn't realize there was black ice. She fell down the driveway and I remember getting blankets or calling 911.
